Workshop Leader biographies:
JAMES HILL
Equal parts disarming, captivating and mind-boggling. That’s the best way to describe a James Hill performance. Hill is that rare performer whose instrumental virtuosity is matched by “impeccably crafted lyrics” (The Australian) and a strong bond with his audience.
Over the course of his first three genre-defying albums, Hill re-wrote every rule that had previously kept the ukulele in the realm of novelty and obscurity. Then came the Canadian-Folk-Music-Award-winning True Love Don't Weep (Borealis, 2009), his collaboration with cellist/singer Anne Janelle, an album that pushed the budding songwriter into new territory and topped folk radio charts across North America. Since the release of his acclaimed Man With a Love Song in 2011, Hill has become known as much for his songwriting as for his instrumental virtuosity.
Hill’s latest album, The Old Silo, finds him charting a course into deeper, rockier waters with producer Joel Plaskett at the helm. The music has an edginess and swagger unlike anything Hill has ever recorded: the thundering baritone ukulele riff in She's Still Got It would be right at home on a Black Keys single and the grinding slide ukulele in Tie One On would make Jack White proud.
A humble, uncompromising artist who "gives the ukulele its dignity back without ever taking himself – or the instrument – too seriously" (Songlines), James Hill’s music cuts a deep, winding path through Folk, Roots Rock and Americana.

CYNTHIA KINNUNEN
In her earlier years, Cynthia pursued studies in piano, flute, bassoon, oboe and voice, completing her conservatory piano levels and a university degree in music. After some years away, it was the ukulele that brought her back to music-making and inspired her to pursue music education again. A Level 3 James Hill Ukulele Initiative teacher, she currently teaches private music instruction in ukulele and piano; ukulele group classes and workshops; the Royal City Ukulele Ensemble program; is Director of the Royal City Uke Fest in Guelph, Ontario, and travels to ukulele festivals around the world to teach and perform.
She has always felt compelled to share music, whether teaching, performing or just making mixtapes. Influences have ranged from early 20th century big band to 80s one-hit wonders, baroque chamber works to the rhythms of world music, renaissance folk songs to 70s punk. Cynthia truly loves the diversity of music. She is also a solo performer and half of the bass/ukulele duo Transit Lounge. Passionate about the role that music can play in our lives, our homes and our communities, she encourages everyone to learn and make music, no matter their age or ability. HEIDI LITKE
Heidi Litke has been building instruments since 2007. She was the co- owner of The Bean Sprout Banjo Ukulele Company for three years. In 2010, Heidi had an amazing opportunity to study with luthier Robbie O’Brien of O’Brien Guitars. There she learned the art of building classical guitars, ukuleles and the French polish technique. In the spring of 2012, she then studied with luthier Edward Dick of Victor Guitars, learning basic repair methods and also auditing a steel string guitar class.
Red Sands Ukuleles is located in the heart of the Maritimes, on Prince Edward Island, Canada. Heidi's path has taken her in a direction of building instruments with sustainable materials that can be gathered locally, thereby reducing the impact on our precious environment. Her ukuleles, Parlour and classical guitars are handcrafted using maple, birch and spruce.
Heidi enjoys playing celtic, baroque and classical music on her ukulele and recently release her CD, Simple Gifts.
Heidi and Robbie O’Brien have just completed filming an online ukulele building course. It can be found at www.obrienguitars.com/ courses/. She is also completed work on detailed ukulele plans for purchase at Luthier Mercantile International, LMI.com and will be releasing an instructional book shortly.
Heidi was recently featured on the front page of “The Guardian” “Picking her Pastime”, In the first addition of “Your Local” in an article “Maritime Woods Make Music” and in a documentary on Eastlink due out soon. For more information: www.redsandsukuleles.com
