The Colchester Film Society is back with round two of our TIFF: Film Circuit screenings at The Marigold Cultural Centre!
This time around, we’re bringing you Steven Soderbergh’s slick and witty new dark comedy, The Christophers.
1960s, elderly painter Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen) has drifted into a cluttered, self-imposed seclusion. Desperate for an inheritance, his two estranged, money-grubbing children (James Corden and Jessica Gunning) enlist Lori (Michaela Coel), a brilliant young painter and sometime-forger, to pose as a prospective assistant.
Lori's secret mission is to gain access to a fabled series of unfinished canvases known as "The Christophers" that Julian has buried deep in his home studio, with the plan to secretly "complete" the works so they can eventually be auctioned off for millions.
However, Julian is much sharper than he appears. What begins as an elaborate, deceptive scheme quickly evolves into a witty, twisty, and highly psychological game of cat-and-mouse between the aging, eccentric master and the young artist hired to deceive him.
