Matt Mays with special guest Adam Baldwin

  • Marigold Cultural Centre 605 Prince Street Truro, NS, B2N 1G2 Canada (map)

JUNO Award-winning singer-songwriter Matt Mays announces a series of intimate tour dates in support of his latest album, Twice Upon a Hell of a Time… Accompanied by bandmates Adam Baldwin and Ryan Stanley (aka The Dark Promises), the shows will feature stripped down and "woody" interpretations of songs from the new album, as well as selections from the deep well of Mays’ critically acclaimed back catalogue. Baldwin will also open the shows with an acoustic set of his own songs. After a solid year of touring with his rock band in support of 2017’s Once Upon a Hell of Time…, Matt Mays is looking forward to these stripped back performances this winter. "It will be nice to put the wild electrics down for a bit and get a bit warm n’ cozy," he says.

ABOUT Twice Upon A Hell of a Time...

The recording sessions for Twice Upon a Hell of a Time... came amidst a particularly busy time for Matt Mays. During a period in which he headlined his first Massey Hall concert and supported sold-out shows with The Gaslight Anthem all over North America, Matt teamed up with co-producer Eric Ratz to record at studios around Toronto between touring commitments. The acoustic companion piece was originally conceived as a straight-up solo interpretation, similar to the iTunes Session recorded with Ratz in 2011. As the songs took shape, however, Matt decided to incorporate extra vocals and instrumentation. Tapping musicians Aaron Goldstein (Daniel RomanoLee Harvey Osmond) on pedal steel, Anthony Carone(Arkells) on piano, and guest singers Andrew RodriguezKate Dyke, and Melissa Payne, the album’s arrangements are lush and large without straying from the torn down vibe he sought from the outset.

Recontextualizing the songs also offers a new window into the lyrics. What he once described as a "party-rock record for the brokenhearted" transforms into a reflective and beautiful dive into false escapism, grief, love, and loss. "The stripped-down record lends clarity and depth to his already nuanced lyrics, revealing a deep thinker who seeks honesty in his craft, and in life." - Beatroute
